Variable Valve Timing:
There are a pair of novel ways by which carmakers vary the valve timing. One system used on some Honda engines is named VTEC.
VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) is an electronic and system in some Honda engines that permits the engine to own multiple camshafts. VTEC engines have an additional intake cam with its rocker, which follows this cam. The profile on this cam keeps the valve open longer than the opposite cam profile. At low engine speeds, this rocker isn’t connected to any valves. At high engine speeds, a piston locks the additional rocker to the 2 rockers that control the 2 intake valves.
Advance Valve Timing:
Some cars use a tool that may advance the valve timing. This doesn’t keep the valves open longer; instead, it opens them later and closes them later. This can be done by rotating the camshaft ahead of some degrees. If the intake valves normally open at 10 degrees before top dead center (TDC) and shut at 190 degrees after TDC, the entire duration is 200 degrees. The opening and shutting times will be shifted employing a mechanism that rotates the cam ahead a bit because it spins. Therefore the valve might open at 10 degrees after TDC and shut at 210 degrees after TDC. Closing the valve 20 degrees later is sweet, but it’d be better to be able to increase the duration that the valve is open.
Several engine manufacturers are experimenting with systems that might allow infinite variability in valve timing. For instance, imagine that every valve had a solenoid thereon that would open and shut the valve using computer control instead of hopping on a camshaft. With this kind of system, you’d get maximum engine performance at every RPM. Something to appear forward to within the future.
