LHT & RHT:
Left-hand traffic (LHT) and right-hand traffic (RHT) are the practices, in bidirectional traffic, of keeping to the left side or to the correct side of the road, respectively. they’re fundamental to traffic flow and are sometimes spoken because of the rule of the road.
RHT is employed in 165 countries and territories, with the remaining 75 countries and territories using LHT. Countries that use LHT account for a few sixth of the world’s area, with a few thirds of its population and 1 / 4 of its roads. In 1919, 104 of the world’s territories were LHT and an equal number were RHT. Between 1919 and 1986, 34 of the LHT territories switched to RHT.
Many LHT countries were formerly a part of a people Empire, although many weren’t, like Sweden (which is now RHT), Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Nepal, Macao, and Suriname, among others. Many RHT countries were a part of the French colonial empire.
In LHT traffic keeps left, and cars usually have the handwheel on the correct (RHD – right-hand drive), putting the driving force on the side closer to the middle of the road. Roundabouts circulate clockwise. RHT is that the opposite of this: traffic keeps right, the driving force usually sits on the left side of the car (LHD), and roundabouts circulate anticlockwise.
In most countries, rail traffic follows the handedness of the roads, although many of the countries that switched road traffic from LHT to RHT failed to switch their trains. Boat traffic on rivers is effectively RHT. Boats are traditionally piloted from the starboard side to facilitate priority to the correct.
