What is Hybrid Vehicle?

2 minutesread

Hybrid Vehicle:

A hybrid vehicle uses two or more distinct styles of power, like submarines that use diesel when surfaced and batteries when submerged. Other means to store energy include pressurized fluid in hydraulic hybrids.

The basic principle with hybrid vehicles is that the various motors work better at different speeds. The electrical motor is more efficient at producing torque, or turning power, and also the combustion engine is best for maintaining high speed (better than the everyday electric motor). Switching from one to the opposite at the right time while speeding up yields a win-win in terms of energy efficiency, in and of itself that translates into greater fuel efficiency, for instance.

Parallel Hybrids:

A parallel hybrid uses both an electric motor and an ICE for propulsion. They will run in tandem, or one will be used because the primary power source with the opposite kicking in to help when extra power is required for starting, climbing hills, and accelerating to pass other vehicles. Because both are connected to the drive train, they’re said to run “in parallel.”

Series Hybrids:

A series hybrid uses gasoline or diesel ICE, not to mention a generator, to get electricity but to not drive the car. The engine can send the electrical current onto the electrical motor or charge an outsized battery that stores the electricity and delivers it to an electrical motor on-demand. The electrical motor propels the vehicle, using its power to rotate a driveshaft or a collection of drive axles that turn the wheels.

Plug-in Hybrids:

Because plug-in hybrids feature larger batteries that may be charged at any ordinary 110-volt electrical socket, they’ll extend the flexibility of the electrical motor to drive the car farther without the necessity for starting the ICE and thus substantially increase the vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Estimates have ranged as high as 100 mpg!

Two-mode Hybrids:

Two-mode hybrids are also the key to a competitive place within the hybrid market. Rather than the massive voltaic battery found on conventional hybrids, two-mode hybrids use smaller batteries and two electric motors located inside a transmission with two sets of gears — one for the ICE and therefore the other to amplify the ability of the electrical motors.

The transmission can function as continuously variable transmission, as well. In one mode, at lower speeds, the vehicle can run with one or both electric motors, with or without the ICE, or on the ICE alone. At higher speeds, the second mode kicks in, and therefore the ICE runs continuously in its higher gear ratios.
