What is Boost Threshold?

2 minutesread

Boost Threshold:

Unlike turbo lag, boost threshold only applies to lower RPM levels, not the complete rev range. At rock bottom RPM levels, there won’t be enough pressure generated by exhaust gases to spin the turbocharger and make a lift. But once the boost threshold is reached, enough gases are generated to urge the turbo to spool up and pushing more air into the engine. This can be the purpose where you are feeling the boost “kick in.”

Boost Threshold Example:

If you’re driving at about 5 mph in a second, your tachometer may need you right around 1,000 RPM. If you punch the accelerator, you won’t get a boost until you reach the boost threshold RPM level. At that time, the turbo will spin enough to push air into the engine.

For the main focus ST, the boost threshold is around 1,500 RPM for many gears. However, for gear mechanism, it’s around 3,000 RPM and in gear mechanism, it’s within the neighborhood of two,000 RPM. This isn’t the result of a mechanical function, but rather, an electronic decision controlled by the car’s computer.

Ford presumably limits boost within the lower gears to avoid/mitigate wheel spin. If you wish to “unlock” some more of this power down within the lower gears, an aftermarket electronic tune will allow you to easily customize the way you wish power delivered.

The low boost threshold that the main focus ST has in most gears means it’s rarely an element in highway passing (although it is somewhat annoying when accelerating from a stop). In terms of turbo lag, the tiny size of the turbo implies that there’s little of it. Engineering has improved over the years, and most recent turbo cars have very minimal amounts of turbo lag.
