What are auto-dimming mirrors?
Auto-dimming mirrors are the special variety of rearview mirrors that may dim the sunshine reflecting from their surface. These mirrors reduce the glare of sunshine coming from trailing vehicles significantly thereby reducing driver fatigue. An auto-dimming mirror has the subsequent major components:
Ambient Sensor: Senses the ambient light. When it senses low ambient light, it gives a symbol to the control unit saying that it’s time to start out working!
Glare sensor: It measures the intensity of the sunshine falling on the mirror and sends the corresponding signal to the control unit.
Control unit: It monitors the functioning of both the sensors and decides against reducing the glare.
Construction of an auto-dimming mirror:
The auto-dimming mirror contains a sandwich-type construction and works on the principle of electrochromism. It comprises a mirror and a plane glass. Two conductive layers are placed side by side to every of the mirror and also the glass. Between these conductive layers, ion storage, electrolyte, and electrochromic layers lie.
After control unit orders to cut back the glare of sunshine, the system applies an electrical voltage across the conductive layers. This causes ions to result in the ion storage layer to the electrochromic layer causing it to darken thereby reducing the number of sunshine reflecting from the mirror. Thus, it achieves glare reduction or dimming.
