Steering-Wheel Lock:
A steering-wheel lock is a visible theft-deterrent system/anti-theft device that, because the name implies, immobilizes the handwheel of a car. Mayhew et al. (1976) suggested that such a tool reduced the probability of a car being stolen.
Also referred to as a crook lock, or club lock, the primary generation of steering-wheel locks, referred to as canes, consisted of a lockable bar that connected the handwheel to the treadle or pedal. Later models include devices that are even more visible as they lock across the wheel and extend out over the dashboard to stop the wheel from being turned.
Wheel-locks are used since a minimum of the first 1920s when many cars were open touring cars, roadsters, or what would later be called convertibles.
