What is a Crossover?

2 minutesread

A crossover SUV (CSUV) – also called a crossover utility vehicle (CUV) – is a kind of automobile vehicle (SUV) of unibody construction. Crossovers have often supported a platform shared with a railcar. Compared to truck-based SUVs, they typically have better interior comfort, a more well-off ride, superior fuel economy, and fewer off-road capability. Many crossovers lack all-wheel drive, which, together with their lesser off-road capability, challenges their definition as “sports utility vehicles”. Furthermore, there are inconsistencies about whether some vehicles are considered crossovers or SUVs; therefore, the term “SUV” is usually used as a catch-all for both crossovers and compact SUVs.

As of 2006, crossover models comprised quite 50% of the SUV market. Crossovers became increasingly popular in Europe also since the first 2010s.

Forerunners of the fashionable crossover include the 1977 Matra Rancho and therefore the AMC Eagle introduced in 1979.

The difference between crossovers and other SUVs is usually defined as a crossover being built employing a unibody platform (the type utilized by most passenger cars), while an SUV is made employing a body-on-frame platform (the type employed by off-road vehicles and light-weight trucks). However, these definitions are often blurred in practice, since unibody vehicles also are often spoken as SUVs. Also, “crossover” is a relatively recent term, and early unibody SUVs (such because the 1984 Jeep Cherokee) are rarely called crossovers. Because of these inconsistencies, the term “SUV” is usually used as an umbrella term for both crossovers and SUVs.
