What does the VIN tell you about the car??

De-Coding the Vehicle Identification Number:

From positions, one to seventeen, all the characters within the VIN are dedicated to a selected form of information which is usually standard for all vehicles and makers. What particular number tells what exactly and the way you’ll be able to decode it, let’s see.

First character position:

The first character within the VIN tells you about the country within which the vehicle is made. It is a digit or a pair of alphabets or a mixture of both.

First three characters:

The combination of the primary three characters within the VIN is usually called the WMI or world manufacturer identifier which helps in identifying the manufacturer of the vehicle. In some cases, the third character only denotes the manufacturer, and also in some cases, the third character denotes the sort of the vehicle(car, bus, or truck). The primary three letters also denote the division of the manufacturer during which the vehicle is produced.

Fourth to Ninth character position:

This section of the VIN represents the Vehicle Description Section (VDS). All the characters falling during this section give information like vehicle type, the platform on which it’s built, model, body type, engine type. Most manufacturers choose different positions for various information during this section. However, the eight positions are commonly used for denoting the engine type.

The ninth character could either represent the safety code or in some cases the month during which the car was manufactured.

Tenth character position:

The Tenth Character mostly represents the year of manufacture for the Vehicle. It’s denoted by an alphabet assigned to every particular year since 1981.

Eleventh character position:

If you wish to understand the manufacturing year of the car, take a glance at the eleventh character. It also tells about the plant where the car was manufactured.

Twelfth to Seventeenth character position:

The last six positions on the VIN are reserved for the serial number which is exclusive to the vehicle. This acts because of the second crucial part of identification for the car.

VIN is the most essential code you’ll find on your car and is your car’s identity. Head towards your car, find the VIN and take a look at to decode and are aware of it.
